College Football Point Spreads

When we are talking about the point spread we mean the number that goes along with each game. You'll see two teams:

School A +5
School B -5

The plus and minus 5 is the point spread and this is the number that is used to even out the betting on both sides of the game. The odds makers want even action so they can take the juice as the profit. The juice is the extra 10% you give to the sportsbooks on losing wagers and that is what takes all of the risk out of the wagering for the sportsbook.

When you decide you want to start betting on the spreads then by taking the favorites your team is going to have to win by more points that the spread in order for you to cash in on your wagers. If you want to take the underdog then your team can still lose and you win your bet as long as the team doesn't lose by more than the spread. So in our example if School B wins, but only wins by three then the backers of School A win the wager.

It seems like new bettors always go after the favorites as they just can't see the team expected to win the game ever losing. This is a fool hardy thing to do because the odds makers take into consideration how many points the favorite is supposed to win by, then they even can compensate a little bit more in order to make sure that the action on the game is as close to even as it can get. The experienced bettors and professionals try to put aside their emotions or negative feelings about the underdogs and take that side, because more times than not the underdogs will win the game.
