The Panthers have controlled the series for the most part despite their offense struggling and scoring only four goals in the first two games. Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Bennett, and Matthew Tkachuk have scored four goals and three assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has struggled. In addition, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been great in this series, stopping 52 of the 54 shots he's faced. While the Ranger's Igor Shesterkin has stepped up in the net, saving 50 of the 53 shots he's faced.

Dallas stands tied for 7th in the league in goals per game as they average 2.80 goals per contest in postseason play. The Stars stand 4th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.40 goals a night this season. Dallas is 4th when it comes to success on the power play as they convert on 29.2% of their chances with the man advantage this season. Colorado heads into this one 1st in the league in goals per game as they average 4.50 goals a night in the postseason. The Avalanche are 11th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.38 goals a contest. Colorado is tied for 2nd in the league with the man advantage as they convert 33.3% of their chances with the man advantage.

Colorado hopes to shake off the slow starts that plagued them in the first two games of this series as they head home for Games 3 and 4. The Avalanche took home ice with their win in Game 1 but they have to be on their toes here to avoid giving it back to the Stars. Colorado heads into this one 1st in the league in goals per game as they average five goals a night in the postseason. The Avalanche are 11th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.29 goals a contest. Colorado is 2nd in the league with the man advantage as they convert 38.1% of their chances with the man advantage.

The Avalanche have won five consecutive playoff games since losing their first-round opener to the Winnipeg Jets. Colorado has shown plenty of offensive punch in that stretch. As much as the Avalanche can take pride in drumming up an impressive comeback victory to kick off this series, they know it is not a long-term recipe for success against the Stars, who finished atop the Western Conference standings in the regular season. Knowing Colorado has the firepower to come back -- led by Nathan MacKinnon, Valeri Nichushkin, Artturi Lehkonen, Mikko Rantanen and defenseman Cale Makar -- is comforting. The Avalanche have 32 goals in six playoff games this year and are the only team averaging more than five goals per game in the postseason. Colorado's cavalcade of talent converted both power-play opportunities in Game 1, and has now clicked for eight goals on 18 chances with the man advantage in the playoffs this year.

Frank Vatrano, Mason McTavish, and Ryan Strome have scored 20 goals and 24 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has stepped up as well.The offense has stepped up but the defense has struggled, allowing 2.93 goals per game.The Avalanche are having a great season with their offense stepping up and scoring 3.36 goals per game with five goals in their recent game.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Karill Kaprizov continue their scoring duel when the St. Louis Blues host the Minnesota Wild in Game 6 of their first-round Western Conference series. Kaprizov scored twice in Game 5 Tuesday to give the Wild a 2-1 lead, but Tarasenko responded with a third-period hat trick to give the Blues a 5-2 victory.  Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington has won both starts since replacing Ville Husso in the nets after Game 3. His ability to handle the puck behind the net helped the depleted Blues defense corps, which regained Nick Leddy and Robert Bortuzzo in Game 5 but is still missing regulars Torey Krug and Marco Scandella due to lower-body injuries. The first-round playoff matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and visiting New York Rangers has heated up off the ice going into Game 4 today. But they're not sniping at each other. Rather, both clubs are expressing faith in their own game. Perhaps that is at least partly due to the way the series has arrived at the Penguins leading 2-1 -- a 4-3 triple-overtime Pittsburgh win, a 5-2 Rangers win and Saturday, as the series shifted to Pittsburgh, a 7-4 Penguins win that featured New York erasing a three-goal deficit only to have Pittsburgh seal it with three goals in the third period. The Devils probably will be starting Jon Gillies in net and he's not great, but Chicago is the third-worst offensive team in the NHL. The Hawks should start Marc-Andre Fleury, and he's more than capable of holding the Devils to one or zero goals (has done so to three of his past five opponents). In fact, I expect a major offensive letdown for New Jersey after a shocking 6-1 win in Pittsburgh on Thursday. Probably my only NHL play today as the board is awful, in my opinion. This may look like a high posted total at first glance, but the Lightning are on an 'over' tear right now while the Devils aren't stopping anyone - quite simply a mess at the back-end. Here, we'll note that the 'over' is 7-1 with the Devils coming off consecutive games scoring two goals or less this season, as is the case here, with that spot producing an average total of 7.3 goals. The 'over' is 6-1 in the Bolts last seven games with the winning side scoring at least five goals in five of those seven contests. Tampa Bay should have little trouble taking advantage of a Devils squad that has allowed 4.0 goals per game on the road this season and has been lit up for 16 goals over its last four games alone. Chicago won the first game between the clubs by a score of 4-2. I think they'll at least reach that number of goals here on Monday. Chicago is off a 3-0 win over Anaheim. The Hawks have scored three or more goals now in six of their last nine games. Defense has been the issue for Chicago this year, ranked 22nd in goals against this season. Seattle has lost nine in a row. The Kraken have struggled on both ends of the ice this year. They rank 24th in goals per game, but 31st in goals against. I believe Chicago can continue its recent offensive form and I look for Seattle to find the back of the net a couple of times tonight as well.

Both expected goalies were rusty after the break; in fact, they were unexpectedly poor.  Columbus gave up 7 goals, and while that number was especially high, high goals against has been an ugly trend for the Blue Jackets.  The Lightning came out flat, and were shut out by the Rangers, so look for a lot more snap and crackle on Tuesday.  Both teams have decent goals-for figures; Columbus's defense has not been impressive.  The Total is only average for this game at the moment.  I like the OVER here. A motivated Lightning team will take it to the Jackets and ride this game over.

NHL Total of the Month

The Golden Knights to build off of their impressive 6-3 win in Los Angeles two nights ago. Of course, Vegas is also missing a number of key cogs but has plenty of depth to persevere. The Knights are expected to have defensive anchor Alex Pietrangelo back for this one. Note that the Knights are 15-3 when revenging a loss against an opponent as a road favorite over the last two seasons, outscoring opponents by 1.5 goals on average in that spot. That's the situation here after Anaheim prevailed by a 6-5 score at home against Vegas back on December 1st

This total has risen from 6 to my magic number of 6.5 because the Oilers are starting backup Stuart Skinner over Mikko Koskinen in net, but I don't care. Offensively, Edmonton has scored two goals or fewer in five straight games. Columbus generally isn't the type of team to score more than three goals.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has actually been very good for the Sabres since being called up not allowing more than 3 goals in a game. However, he will face the highest scoring team in the league in Minnesota tonight as they are averaging 4.5 goals per game at home. Wild overs are 11-1 at home while Sabres are 8-4 to the over on the road. Cam Talbot is starting for the Wild and he allowed 6 goals in his last outing, I like this over.

 Brad Marchand and Matthew Barzal will be out for this game and those are big losses for both teams. The Islanders average just 2.13 goals per game while the Bruins average just 2.76 goals per game. 7 of the last 8 games for the Bruins have come in with this under, and the Islanders average an even lower 1.6 goals per game at home. Linus Ullmark has been very good for the Bruins. This should be a defensive battle with both top offensive players injured, take the under.

I understand why this total has moved to 6, but New Jersey simply can't score right now and Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood has been way better at home (1.98 GAA) so he could slow a potent Knights offense. Vegas is expected to go with backup Laurent Brossoit (2.66 GAA, .911 SV), but he actually has better numbers than No. 1 Robin Lehner. We might push here, but I don't think lose barring a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation.

I usually stay away from overs at 6.5 but honestly this over/under should be set at 7. Both these teams are high risk, high reward teams. Anthony Duclair and Aleksander Barkov were out of the lineup last game but they could be back in tonight. Gabriel Landeskog left the Aves last game early, but Nazem Kadri is expected to return tonight. Aves home games are 8-2 to the over this season and the Aves have scored 7 goals in each of their last 3 games. Take the over.

 The Oilers have the best power play in the league, but they will be facing the second-best penalty kill in the league, so that should keep scoring in check. The Oilers haven’t scored more than 2 goals in any of their last 3 games while the Canes haven’t allowed more than 2 goals in any of their last three. The Oilers goalies have been questionable lately so I am a little worried that pushes this one over, but now that it is at 6.5 there is still value. I was originally going to wait to make sure the starting goalies were in but now the line jumped up to 6.5 so I think there's value either way. Wouldn't be surprised to see Severance hop on too now since we all know his love for 6.5 unders, and it looks like this is the only 6.5 today. Take the under.

The Bruins score just 2.8 goals per game on the road while the Flames score just 2.7 goals per game at home, but these are two of the best defenses in the league. The Flames allow just 2.15 goals per game, good for 1st in the league, while the Bruins allow just 2.57 goals per game, good for 6th best. Linus Ullmark hasn’t allowed more than 2 goals in any of his last 4 starts and Jeremy Swayman has been even better for the Bruins. Jacob Markstrom hasn’t allowed more than 3 goals in his last 12 starts. Both teams are top 10 in penalty kill %, if we can avoid a 3-2 empty netter, this should finish under.

The Flyers played last night and won, so they are expected to start Martin Jones in net today while the Coyotes played yesterday as well, so they are expected to start Karel Vejmelka today. The Flyers average just 1.8 goals per game on the road, so don’t let their 4 goal outburst against a backup goalie last night fool you. The Coyotes average just 2.3 goals per game this season at home and they haven’t scored more than 2 goals in their last 6 games. These are your 27th and 32nd ranked teams in terms of goals scored, take the under.

Canucks unders are now 11-1 at home and as Ive said, we will ride that trend until it stops. All three of the Canucks home games this homestand have hit this under and the Jets played last night so they should be a little weary. The Canucks have played very good defense in front of Thatcher Demko since hiring Bruce Boudreau and I think that will continue tonight against a poor road team. The Jets score just 2.3 goals per game on the road while the Canucks score 2.2 goals per game at home. Eric Comrie should get the start for the Jets, but he has been solid so far this season. It looks like this line will rise to 6 but I actually want to get this play in at +115 at 5.5 instead of adding a push scenario at -125 at 6 because I feel like there is more value at plus money. If it goes over, I think there will be more than 6 goals scored.

The Blue Jackets score just 2.5 goals per game on the road, and they didn’t score more than three in any of the four games in their last road trip. The Maple Leafs are dominant at home where they are 9-5 to the Under, but they only allow two goals per game at home. This was 5.5 earlier but it has popped up to 6 so I will take it while its at 6. I think the Blue Jackets score 2 goals max, so we just have to hope the Maple Leafs sc, so let's take the Under at this number.

Canucks are 9-1 to the under at home this season and the Kings are 6-2 to the under on the road. The Kings played last night so they should be a little weary. Last night's game was also 2-1 until the very end of the third period so the 5-1 final score is deceiving. Cal Peterson is the Kings backup and he is expected to start tonight, but he has only allowed more than 3 goals twice this season. Thatcher Demko has been much better for the Canucks as of late, but the Canucks just fired their leadership so I would expect the Canucks to be more focused tonight with everyone now playing for their job security. I think one of these teams gets shut down, I like the under.
